Get to know Arilyn – Topi, Junior Content Specialist

Written by Frida Gullichsen | 15.8.2018

Another edition of faces of Arilyn back with the questions we are all dying to know the answers to. We will be blasting some serious and other not so serious questions to our own Topi Jalvas, better.

So who is Topi at Arilyn and how did he end up here?

Topi is a Junior Content Specialist at Arilyn. I'm a part of the production team at Arilyn, and my tasks mostly consist of creating 3D and some 2D AR content. [This spring] I finished my Degree Programme in Media at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences where I was studying 3D animation and visualisation. Before that, I was learning how to make comics at Muurlan Opisto in Salo. So basically my interests in drawing and visual arts lead me to 3D modelling and animation.

If you didn't do that, what would you be doing?

If I would stop doing visual arts, I think I would pursue music and sound design. It's super interesting how audio is made for movies and TV-shows. Plus I love music and already play a little bit of guitar so being a musician would also be interesting.

Any job you would be terrible at?

I think I would make a terrible politician.

Politicians usually are terrible so never say never. Anything do you wish you knew more about?

In recent years I have found myself to be very interested in psychology, so it would be very interesting to know more on that subject.

And what about breakfast, tell us what you had?

Unfortunately nothing. I usually skip breakfast so I can sleep a bit longer. I know it's healthy to eat breakfast, but you know... Priorities.

What would you rather have had?

I haven't had porridge in a long time so maybe that.

Favourite drink?

Wheat beer. I love Hoegaarden and Franziskaner Hefe-Weissbier.

Favourite season?

Definitely summer. Finland is mostly a cold and dark place, so the light and warmth of summer just feels so much more special.

What about the rain then, do you like it?

Sure, but when I'm indoors. Watching rain through the window when traveling by bus or train is very therapeutic. Thunderstorms are also very interesting to watch.

Chocolate or strawberry, which one?

I do like both, but I eat a lot more chocolate than strawberries, so I have to say chocolate.

Dogs or cats?

Dogs, but cats are cool too.

Do you have a hero?

I don't know if I have any "heroes", but I do have people that inspire me greatly. For example Devin Townsend, Jean "Moebius" Giraud and Rob Bottin.

What about your biggest career fail, got any?

I don't recall anything that special unfortunately. My career as a 3D artist is pretty short so I don't have that many significant fails. Well at least not yet. Everybody fails at some point.

Any good career advice then?

Do what you love and never stop improving yourself and your abilities. It's a cliché thing to say, but it's true.

Favourite band?

Metallica, because they've had the biggest impact on my taste in music. I have been a so-called "metalhead" ever since I started listening to them. Although I would like to point out that I also listen to a lot of different types of music, in addition to metal. It just happens that I find metal music to be the most interesting.

Any great frustrations in life?

People who act like they're better than you and also people with no patience really grinds my gears.

And to finish off, in the movie of your life, who would play you?

It would be awesome if Jack Black could play me and the genre of the movie would be a metal musical. Kyle Gass could play one of my friends. It would be glorious.

Jack Black rocks, would definitely watch your movie. Thank you, Topi for the interview, was a blast blasting you.

So that was it for this week's faces of Arilyn, back again next week!

Augmented regards,
