BBC's the Green Planet inspires a 5G powered AR experience, Panasonic reveals its AR HUD, and Samsung joins the AR tracker game.

BBC Studios, 5G mobile network operator EE, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Talesmith, and Dimension Studios have announced a 5G AR consortium. The consortium will work together on an innovation project to explore and develop a groundbreaking AR experience inspired by the landmark BBC One's upcoming TV series, The Green Planet.
The app, inspired by the series, will encourage audiences to discover new and surprising wonders of the natural world. Combined with AR technology, the app will enable audiences of all ages to explore the world from the fascinating perspective of plants and discover more about the interconnectivity of all life on Earth through high-resolution holographic video and the powerful storytelling by sir David Attenborough.
The consortium will work closely with digital learning specialists to ensure the app gives audiences a deeper connection and understanding of life on our planet in an interactive way. The experience is set to launch in 2022.
Panasonic's futuristic heads-up display uses a combination of AR visuals and AI technology to deliver crucial information, such as collision detection, route guidance, eye-tracking, and basic vehicle information, in real-time without distracting the driver.
"Panasonic's AR HUD solutions cover more of the roadway, with traditional cluster content like speed and fuel in the near field as well as 3D overlays in the far field, showing navigation and other critical driver data mapping spatially to the road ahead. And in a future with more self-driving vehicles, our AR HUD could provide an important added level of comfort and assurance for AV passengers as well," said Scott Kirchner, president Panasonic Automotive and executive director, Panasonic Smart Mobility, in a press release.
During the Unpacked 2021 event, Samsung unveiled the new Galaxy SmartTags and SmartTags Plus - the connected devices designed to attach to keychains, backpacks, and pet collars and track them.
The devices use the SmartThings Find platform to locate nearby items via Bluetooth. SmartTags Plus comes with an additional AR feature to the sleuthing experience. Like Live View on Google Maps, on-screen navigation guide users in the direction of their lost items.
The AR finder functionality also extends to Samsung's new Digital Key platform, helping drivers find their cars in a parking lot with AR. Samsung collaborates with Audi, BMW, Ford, and Genesis to implement Digital Key into the upcoming vehicles.
The SmartTags are coming to the market on January 29th, but the AR features we can wait a little longer, as there are no release dates.
