Visitors of the city tour featuring quintessential Helsinki bars and cafés got to experience real movie magic when classic Aki Kaurismäki movie scenes came to life in their original locations with the help of augmented reality.
Finnish travel media company Tripsteri launched a city tour in their travel app, “Kaurismäki joints”. The tour listed classic Helsinki bars, cafés and restaurants featured in movies directed by iconic Finnish movie director Aki Kaurismäki, a well-known and loved director worldwide.
Together will Arilyn, an idea was born: relive classic scenes, as Aki Kaurismäki movies come to life in Helsinki bars & cafés.
Augmented reality enhanced the movie scenes. When scanned, the coasters found at bars, cafés and restaurants along the tour revealed an old TV displaying the names of the legendary Helsinki joints. When selected, the scene filmed at the joint was displayed on the TV screen, giving the viewer an insight into what the bar looked like decades ago on the movie set.
Augmented reality offers a different kind of city tour. It delivers an unforgettable experience, blending the past and the present and immersing viewers in classic Helsinki joints, which many legends have frequented over the past decenniums.
One of the movies featured in the tour, Calamari Union, was also shown at Riviera's movie theatre in Kallio, Helsinki.
