A new digital museum service, Digimuseo, launched in May of 2020. Digimuseo aims to make museum content available in an inspiring and safe digital environment and user-friendly for all consumers and museums.
Up until now, museums in Finland have had a varying state of digital services, depending on their resources. Digimuseo brings a much-needed tool to equal possibilities on preservation and accessibility.

The goal for Digimuseo is to promote and develop museum activities and collaboration, along with digital preservation and accessibility of cultural heritage. The digimuseo.fi platform collects together different digital services museums offer. Among them are XR exhibitions.
Special exhibitions offered by Digimuseo come as virtual tours or through XR technology. The exhibits are available to explore on any smart device: smartphone, tablet, or computer. Digimuseo recommends a high-speed internet connection for your visit.
At this point, Digimuseo offers four different special exhibits to visit: Pharmacy Museum and Gwensel House, Sarka - The Finnish Agriculture Museum, Helinä Rautavaara Museum, and The Gems of John Nurminen Foundation, the two latter being the ones using XR.
Helinä Rautavaara and John Nurminen Foundation exhibitions are made by using WebXR, browser-based XR. WebXR allows users to access the immersive content easily: without the need to download an app.
In October 2021, Digimuseo launched a new online exhibition; Wäinö Aaltonen Museum of Art. WAM for short is an art museum in central Turku, Finland, dedicated to modern art. The online exhibition showcases Wäinö Aaltonen's career.
Known as a master of public art and a national sculptor of his time, WÄinö Aaltonen has earned his place in Finnish art history. What kind of person was he behind all this?
The entirely virtual exhibition in the digital museum celebrates the impressive career of the artist and delves into the early decades of his life. The exhibition familiarises us with the artist’s career from the perspective of two cities. The journey starts in Turku – the city where Wäinö’s childhood home, places of study and the first studios are located. Later, we will follow his steps to Helsinki.
The WÄINÖ – “Would that my heart were stone” exclusively virtual online Art exhibition showcases Wäinö Aaltonen's career through paintings and 3D sculptures, and utilizes our Infinity Room -concept. Infinity Room enables exhibitors to display more Art in the online space.
The exhibition was curated and built by WAM itself, with Arilyn's Virtual Art Gallery platform.
